                      Millet is one of the oldest foods, well known to humans and possibly the first cereal grain. Millets are many round in shape, tiny in size, high in nutrition, capable of growing in harsh climatic condition, satisfying and healthy for all. They consume very less water, need no synthetic chemicals and extremely energy efficient. Millets are an ancient and ancestor's food being reclaimed.

Millets are slow digesting rich in dietary fiber. Nutritionally superior grain to rice and wheat in terms of protein, vitamins and minerals. Millet is highly nutritious, non-glutinous, have good protein value and is easy to digest. In fact, it is considered as one of the least allergenic and digestible grain. Available with its warming quality this grain also helps to heat the body in cold or rainy seasons and climates.

The seeds are typically cooked as a cereal grain or sometimes finely ground and used as a flour. Millet is very rich in amino acids. It is also used to make bread, soup, biscuits, flour, porridge, cakes, alcoholic beverages etc. Millet is commonly used in various remote parts of India as a staple food.

Millets are used in brewing millet beer in some cultures. It is used in various parts of the world as a based ingredient for distilled liquor. Millets are also eaten in the form of porridge or savoury with meat and vegetable stew. It can be grown in extreme hot and dry places were other crops are difficult to grow.

Due to the suggestion of the Indian President, the United Nations announced the year 2023 as the International Millet Year.
